Bone Densitometry

Your physician has recommended that you have a bone densitometry test. This is a test which measures the bone mineral content and density of specific bone sites that are most susceptible to fractures due to osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases.

Why Have Bone Densitometry?

Osteoporosis affects over 25 million Americans and is responsible for over one million bone fractures each year. Bone densitometry can detect bone loss that makes you susceptible to fractures during its earliest stage. The results of the test will enable your physician to make an early diagnosis of osteoporosis and begin a course of treatment. Since medication is now available which actually reverses the bone loss process, this test is also a valuable tool used to monitor the effectiveness of the medication. A bone densitometry test may also be recommended if you are postmenopausal, taking steroid medication, have hyperthyroidism, or have had a fracture in which osteoporosis is suspected.

What To Expect During The Test

Bone densitometry is a simple, non-invasive test which is fast and painless. On the day of the test, you will come to the X-Ray department at Divine Providence Hospital. Wear comfortable clothing, preferably without metal buttons, buckles or zippers. For the test, you will be asked to lie on a table while a machine scans one or more areas of bone. You will be exposed to very little radiation - in fact, in most cases, less than a standard chest x-ray. As with any procedure, be sure to tell your doctor and x-ray department if you are pregnant.

How Long Does The Test Take?

Your appointment will take approximately 30 minutes. This includes registration, completing a brief questionnaire on your health history and the test itself. Please be prompt for your appointment.

How To Schedule A Bone Densitometry Test

Bone densitometry tests must be scheduled by your physician. Be sure to bring your physician referral form and any insurance information with you so our receptionist is able to complete your paperwork. If you have had a spinal x-ray from a hospital other than Divine Providence Hospital or The Williamsport Hospital, this should also be brought with you on the day of your bone densitometry test.

Will The Test Be Covered By Insurance?

Bone densitometry is considered a screening and usually is covered by insurance providers. Prior to having this test, you should check with your provider to see if you have coverage for this test.
