Depending on insurance limitations, patients may refer themselves for an appointment to the Breast Health Center, or their primary health care provider they may refer them. It is important for patients to check with their insurance carrier to determine if a referral is required prior to their office visit.

What To Bring

To help our doctors complete a thorough evaluation, patients should bring:

• all past mammograms and results.
• reports of past tests, i.e. ultrasounds, CT scans, Sestamibi scans.
• information pertaining to your general health history.
• list of medications you are currently taking*.

*it is important to tell the doctor if you are taking blood thinners, aspirin therapy or antiarthritic medications.

What To Expect

Patients sometimes seem anxious when they first come to the Breast Health Center. To help calm their anxieties, all new patients visit first with a Breast Health Specialist - a registered nurse who has specialized in the area of breast health care and breast cancer.

As a member of the Breast Health Team, the Specialist will review a first-time patient's breast history and perform a thorough breast examination. She provides education and information regarding the patients specific breast problem or concern.

The patient then sees the doctor, who, after a complete breast examination and review of mammograms and other test results, will discuss the various options for treatment or management of any noted abnormality. Throughout the experience, the Breast Health Specialist is available to act as patient advocate, educator and counselor.
