Why be a VolunTEEN?

VoluntTEENs are recognized as an important part of the hospital family. They support the services of departments by assisting patients and staff. VolunTEENs are dependable, mature, independent, outgoing, positive, enthusiastic and sensitive people.

A VolunTEEN's Responsibilities?

VolunTEEN responsibilities include being on time for scheduled assignments, taking directions from our staff, working as a team member, managing time effectively and maintaining a clean, neat appearance, purchase uniform shirt, attend orientation and obey hospital policies.

Depending on your placement, you might run errands, talk with patients, escort, assist therapists, answer phones, play games with nursing home residents, collate charts or distribute ice water to patients.

Susquehanna Health Scholarship

Purpose

Our VolunTEEN Scholarship assists Susquehanna Health high school volunteers who wish to further their education toward a career in the medical or allied medical fields. The scholarship will be awarded annually by the Susquehanna Health Volunteer Services department to an individual who has demonstrated his or her commitment to quality healthcare through exemplary volunteer service. The Auxiliaries of Susquehanna Health, Providence Health System Foundation and The Williamsport Hospital Foundation provide funding for the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

The following basic criteria must be met before an application will be accepted for consideration:

  • The applicant must have been an active SH in-service volunteer for the required hours during their 9-12 grade high school years and currently enrolled in high school at the APPLICATION DEADLINE OF APRIL 15.
  • The applicant must have contributed in excess of 150 hours of service, at least 30 of which must be in the senior year, as a SH volunteer at the time of application.
  • The applicant must have been accepted by a college university or recognized training program at the time of application.
  • The applicant must be pursuing a career in the medical or allied medical fields such as PT, OT, nursing, pharmacology, respiratory therapy, medical technology, medical records, etc.

Application

Receipt of the following by Volunteer Services will constitute an application for the scholarship:

  • A letter stating desire for consideration for the scholarship.
  • A completed application form to be supplied by the SH Volunteer Services department.
  • Written references from three individuals as follows:
    • One academic reference (teacher, guidance counselor, etc.).
    • One personal reference (must be an adult non-family member).
    • One work reference (employer, volunteer supervisor, etc.).

  • A written statement by the applicant including:
    • Reason for career choice.
    • Future career directions.
    • Perspectives, if any, gained through volunteer service.
    .
  • A copy of your high school academic transcript through the first semester of the current school year, including current subjects and grades, GPA and class rank.

Selection Process

Scholarship recipients will be selected based on a comparative review of application materials by a three-person panel and applicant interview, if necessary, for decision making. The recipient of the scholarship should demonstrate:

  • A high level of commitment to his/her career choice.
  • Potential for leadership in his/her chosen field.
  • Exemplary service as a volunteer.
  • A service orientation in personal activities and interests.
  • Academic record that reflects potential for success in career choice.

Notification of Award

All applicants will be informed of the decision by mail. The acceptance letter will confirm the amount of the scholarship, the date of the award presentation, and the request for confirmation of your enrollment in a higher learning institution. A check in the amount of $500 will be made payable to you and the institution, jointly.
