Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Dementia can make you confused and unable to remember people and names. You also may experience changes in personality and social behavior. Dementia is not just a disease for elderly people. Early onset dementia can occur before the age of 65.

Dementia indicates problems with at least two brain functions, such as memory loss and impaired judgment or language, and the inability to perform some daily activities such as paying bills or becoming lost while driving.

Dementia can affect thinking functions such as memory, attention, language and problem solving. The most common forms of progressive dementia are Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, front temporal dementia and Lewy body dementia.

The Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center offers educational and support services for dementia. These include, but are not limited to, public speaking engagements, educational materials and information regarding local support groups.
