UPMC Susquehanna Celebrates Nursing Excellence

“Everything you do matters. You make a difference in our patients’ lives by living our mission by providing life-changing medicine,” said Lori Beucler, vice president and chief nursing officer at UPMC Susquehanna, as she addressed the crowd of more than 370 nurses during UPMC Susquehanna's 24th annual Nurses Recognition and Awards Banquet held Wednesday, May 9 at the Scottish Rite, Williamsport.

Among the Friends Acknowledging Nurses (FAN) Award winners were Cyndy Whipple, RN (Life’s Work Award for Nursing Excellence); Dave Watral, RN (Sister Jean Mohl Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice, Leadership and Community Service); Kathyrn Kleckner, RN (Pat Stopper Award for Excellence in Nursing Management); Amy Bower, RN (Carol Fry Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice); Rebecca Castle, RN (Ellen Taylor Award for Excellence in Obstetrical Care Clinical Practice); Loretta Park, RN (Catino Award for Excellence in Critical Care Clinical Practice); Amber Evock, RN (Hospice Award); Jessica Tote, RN (Neuroscience Award); and Andrea Liebersohn, RN (Award for Excellence in Emergency Care Clinical Practice).

Recipients of the Above Clinical Excellence (ACE) Awards were Brooke Scott Knecht, LPN (LPN Excellence); Kate Girio, RN (Educator, RC, Case Manager); Rachel Borek, RN (Leadership Team Director, Manager, Supervisor); Kathleen Keiser, RN (Exceptional Mentor Preceptor); Lori Mann, RN (Outpatient Nurse); Jennifer Woodworth, LPN (Long Term Care Nurse); Veniese Lawrence, RN (Advance Professional); Vanessa Slaughter, RN (Nightingale Award); Laura Miller, RN (Champion of Dignity and Respect); Karen Bennett, RN (Sundown Nurse Award); Brooke Gordner, RN (Patient Care); Stephanie Grey, RN (Rising Star); Yvonne Martin, RN (Nursing Informatics User Excellence Award); and Rachel Nolan, RN (Leading with Wisdom).

New for 2018, Tiffany Rainey, LPN, was presented with the Angelina’s Dream Award, recognizing an LPN committed to the journey to RN licensure. The nursing unit at UPMC Susquehanna Soldiers + Sailors was presented with the UPMC Susquehanna Experience Award, and six nurses were recognized as with Nurse of the Year Awards: Emily Shelly, RN; Mary Esslinger, RN; Melissa Shields, RN; Elizabeth Halterman, RN; Sandra Pecynski, RN; and Corrina Gnoffo, RN.

“As nurses, we are out there every day making a difference. We are world-class care providers, and our compassion to help others is what truly matters and sets us apart. Nurses are the heart of our organization, and it’s because of you that we can do what we do every day,” said Beucler.

The dinner capped off a week of celebratory and informational events for UPMC Susquehanna nurses including research poster presentations, luncheons and blessing of the hands ceremonies.

National Nurses Week focuses attention on the dedication, commitment and tireless effort of nurses nationwide. The week began May 6, which was also Registered Nurse Recognition Day, and ended May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
