Two UPMC Susquehanna nurses were recently recognized as recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Elva Schmidt, a nurse with the medical/surgical team at Muncy Valley Hospital, was selected after being nominated by two patients. One patient commented, “Elva was courteous, compassionate, and empathetic. She went the extra mile to explain all aspects of the care she was providing.” Another patient wrote, “Elva is a wonderful nurse that will go out of her way help others. She saved my life by acting quickly and getting me the care I needed.”

Brianna Sipe, a nurse with the progressive care unit at Williamsport Regional Medical Center, was selected after being nominated by a patient. “Brianna cared for me on three occasions. I am blessed to have been cared for by her and to have experienced her talent as a nurse. Her energy, cheerfulness, and bubbly personality helped me when I was down and emotionally distressed. She took care of me like I was her best friend and we had only known each other for a few hours. She is one of the best nurses I’ve ever had and I hope that if I need care again, I find myself in her hands.”

Nurses from UPMC Susquehanna are selected every quarter. Anyone may nominate a nurse for a DAISY award – a co-worker, patient, patient’s family or physician. Nomination forms are available at nursing stations and at

The DAISY Awards are currently presented in over 900 hospitals, both nation-wide and internationally.
