UPMC Susquehanna Heartworks to Host Open House April 30

by UPMC Susquehanna

UPMC Susquehanna’s Heartworks is celebrating 10 years of offering grief support services for children, teens, and their families with an open house on Tuesday, April 30 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center, Divine Providence Campus, 3rd Floor, 1100 Grampian Blvd.

“Heartworks started 10 years ago as a pilot six-week session with 11 children ages 6-12 and their families,” said Linda Bryant, Heartworks program coordinator. “In the years since, the program has grown to offer support groups for four different age groups throughout the school year, special summer time activities, and also provides resources to the community such as grief support bags in schools and libraries. Children and teens often feel alone when they experience a death. Through support and companionship our programs reduce those feelings of loneliness.”

Heartworks' staff and trained volunteers provide a safe and caring environment where participants may express their feelings and develop coping skills following the loss of a loved one. The Heartworks program uses art, play, music, discussion, and remembering to help children understand and work through their emotions.

The open house will feature tours of the Heartworks meeting rooms with representatives from the program, as well as children's activities, the Heartworks library and a short film on children's grief.  Light refreshments will be provided.
