Types of Hearing Disorders
There are many conditions that may affect your ability to hear properly. There are two main types of hearing disorders or hearing loss.
- Your inner ear, or auditory nerve, becomes damaged (this is usually permanent)
- Sound waves cannot reach your inner ear (due to fluid, earwax buildup or a punctured eardrum)
What Causes Hearing Loss?
You may experience a hearing condition or loss of hearing due to:
- Certain medicines
- Diseases, such as ear infections and meningitis
- Long-term exposure to loud noise
Hearing Disorder Treatment
If you need treatment for a hearing disorder, doctors at UPMC provide hearing tests to evaluate your symptoms to offer potential solutions, such as hearing aids and assistive listening devices (ALD) to help you hear clearly. If you have a condition that requires surgery, your audiologist can refer to you an ear, nose and throat specialist for further treatment.
