Learn More About Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is a diagnostic procedure performed by your gastroenterologist in order to examine, diagnose and treat problems in the upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract, including your esophagus, stomach and duodenum. One of the most common conditions this procedure tests for is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The Digestive Disease Center utilizes an outpatient EGD procedure called Bravo® pH Monitoring, a non-invasive test in which your doctor places a pH capsule the size of a gelcap in your esophagus. The capsule takes only moments to put in place and is so small you can eat and function as you normally would. The pH monitoring system is relatively painless, although some patients feel a slight sensation when they eat. This can be minimized by chewing food carefully.
If you or a loved one is experiencing a gastrointestinal problem, our digestive disease providers offer EGD in Williamsport, PA. To meet with a gastroenterologist, visit our office at Williamsport Regional Medical Center, located on the 5th floor, or call (570) 321-3454 to make an appointment.
How the Procedure Works
- Your doctor will place the capsule in your esophagus, pin it to the esophagus wall, and remove the delivery device.
- The device will immediately begin to measure the acidity of the esophagus and transmit the information to a receiver you will wear around your belt or waistband. The test will last for at least 48 hours, during which you will be asked to keep a record of your symptoms, such as coughing, heartburn or regurgitation after eating or lying down.
What to Expect After the Procedure
After the test is completed, you will return your record of symptoms and Bravo receiver to your doctor, who will upload the data to a computer to analyze and diagnose you. The pH capsule will naturally fall off several days after the test and will pass through your digestive tract.
