A screening mammogram is a breast X-Ray exam that screens breast tissue for abnormalities or variations that could indicate breast cancer or other breast diseases. A diagnostic mammogram is a breast X-ray exam performed when a screening mammogram shows possible abnormalities OR when patients have symptoms such as breast pain or lumps. Digital mammography is a safe, low-dose X-ray that can detect small changes in the breast, especially those that you or your healthcare provider cannot feel during a breast examination. It can detect 90-95 percent of all breast cancers.
3D mammogram is a type of digital mammogram, also known as tomosynthesis, it can be screening or diagnostic and is state of the art technology when evaluating dense breast tissue.
How Computer Aided Detection Helps Improve the Process
The earlier breast cancer is detected, the higher the odds of finding effective treatment. Our radiologists now use computer-aided detection (CAD) to further improve their ability to find even the smallest breast cancers at their earliest stages. CAD is sometimes referred to as a second pair of eyes in that it is designed to pick up abnormalities in the breast that are not always evident to the radiologist upon an initial evaluation, such as tiny calcium deposits indicating cancer or small masses or distortions.
Some women may require more advanced diagnostic testing. If a woman has especially high breast tissue density, a whole breast ultrasound is recommended usually in addition to 3D/tomosynthesis. Mammograms must be only one part of a regular screening program that also includes an annual clinical breast exam and monthly breast self-examination.
