Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a type of hands-on therapy used to prevent, treat, and manage conditions that affect the nerves, muscles, and bones –– or the neuromusculoskeletal system. The goal is to restore natural, healthy functioning of the body, with a focus on healing the whole person, not just their symptoms or conditions.
OMM therapy is performed by doctors of osteopathic medicine (DO), who have both a standard medical education, as well as specialized training in manipulative techniques like stretching, gentle pressure and resistance to help patients find relief.
We offer OMM at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center, as part of our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation services.
To schedule your appointment, call 570-321-2820 or find an OMM specialist online.
Treating Pain & Medical Conditions With OMM
Osteopathic manipulation is often an effective strategy for pain management. Patients of all ages can turn to osteopathic treatments to alleviate pain and discomfort caused by injuries, illnesses and life-long diseases.
Conditions treated include:
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Joint pain
- Tension or migraine headaches
- Post-concussion syndrome
- Mobility issues
What to Expect During Your OMM Appointment
During treatment, your doctor may shift, stretch, bend, or apply gentle pressure to different areas of your body. This may occur while you’re lying down or sitting in an upright position. It should not hurt, and your doctor can adjust any of the techniques to meet your needs.
