While some orthopaedic conditions can be difficult to diagnose, specialists at UPMC use a variety of diagnostic imaging tests to evaluate symptoms and determine or rule out a correct diagnosis.
Orthopaedic Tests Offered at UPMC
As a leader in orthopaedic care, UPMC offers the latest diagnostic tests to evaluate and diagnose joint pain and muscle aches in patients of all ages. The following tests may be suggested by your orthopaedic provider, depending on the type and location of your pain:
An X-ray uses a small amount of radiation to produce images of changes in bones. An X-ray can reveal fractured bones or point out any diseases or other injuries affecting joints.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Doctors at UPMC rely heavily on MRI for diagnosing a variety of orthopaedic conditions. Using a powerful magnet and radio waves, MRI produces cross-sectional images of the inside of your body. This allows your doctor to see any damage to your joints, muscles, or bones.
These types of tests are performed to evaluate the range of motion in your affected joint. It can help your doctor determine if you have arthritis, a sprain or a more serious orthopaedic condition. Flexibility tests are normally not painful. Your doctor may ask you to reach down and touch your toes or turn your back to the side.
