Physical medicine and rehabilitation helps people living with temporary or permanent physical limitations improve their mobility. The primary goals are to:
- Improve quality of life.
- Increase independence.
- Help patients carry out daily activities with the least amount of pain and discomfort.
- Help patients return to activities they enjoy.
At UPMC Susquehanna, we provide physical medicine care for our Williamsport, PA, and surrounding Tioga and Lycoming County communities. With additional training and skills, our specialists provide care for the whole patient—mind, body and spirit.

Conditions We Treat
When a condition affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints or muscles limits daily life or causes discomfort, physical medicine and rehabilitation is often an effective treatment.
Physical medicine can help:
- Mobility after amputations
- Developmental conditions
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Spinal cord injuries
Abnormalities in brain function are often the cause for many cognitive, emotional, and behavioral conditions. Neuropsychology specifically examines how brain function affects skills, such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning, especially following a traumatic brain injury or stroke. This allows our providers to develop personalized treatments to help manage a variety of conditions, such as:
- Depression, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric conditions
- Learning disorders
- Side effects of brain damage or injuries
- Memory problems, including Alzheimer’s disease
- Movement disorders
An Extension of Care
UPMC Susquehanna provides both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. We offer inpatient rehabilitation in our rehabilitation unit, where patients receive 3-5 hours of therapy seven days a week. Outpatient rehabilitation requires less time and can take place at any of our nine rehabilitation facilities.
During therapy, you will work with a team of specialists –– your doctor, a nurse practitioner, physical therapist and other experts –– to create a personalized plan of care.
